The connection with Maritime was severed but the club had to wait until 1984 before being allowed to use the Ponsonby United name and colours.

1984
Ponsonby again!. The club won their promotion semi-final against Marist in extra-time but were denied promotion on a technicality involving team strength.

1985
Gained promotion to the First Division. The premises at Blake Street were purchased by the club from the Auckland City Council.

1986
Relegated again. Joe Ropati became Ponsonby's latest Kiwi.

1990
Won the Second Division championship and promoted. The new ARL format guaranteed each team two years in the top level after which time any club could apply for inclusion in the First Division.
